FORGET ABOUT DOING SIMILAR EFFECTS IN THE SAME PROGRAM

Even if paper tear effects are your favorite, and you have several with different messages, only use one per show. Bottom line they are the same effect. A rule in the art of illusion is “never repeat a trick” so to do it again has the audience ready for what is going to happen and it is more likely to be figured out. It is also a good idea to not use a tool like a change bag more than once. If you do, make sure it is a different type (as there are several). This also will push you to expand your repertoire by using other types of effects. When I was about ten I decided to do a magic show in my backyard. My mother helped me make invitations that were rabbits that when pulled from the hat, had the information about the show. I put together my act which included ten effects, eight of which were using the Tommy Windsor Popcorn Dye Box. Since I only had one of these, I had my sister sit under the card table that was covered with a blanket and change out the loads. When I finished with one effect, I would set the box on the floor behind the table, segue from the one effect to the next, pick up the box (freshly loaded) and keep going. When I finished my last of the eight effects with the box and went to my closer, my six inch set of linking rings, I heard a kid in the audience say to another, “I’m glad it isn’t that stupid popcorn thing again.” Well I got feedback, and when I shared it with my folks, they suggested that maybe in the future I only use it for one thing in a show. Now they aren’t professional entertainers with years of experience to speak from, but they were right on track with that comment. Kif |
