FORGET THAT THEY KNOW THAT YOU ARE JUST DOING TRICKS

Studying the art of illusion, we tend to forget that there are those who don’t realize that what is happening is just an effect, and that it is not real. This is especially true when performing for children. This is why it is good to have an effect that you can “expose” or that it appears that you are exposing. With the effects like “What’s Next” or “Dubious Domino” (board is shown with one spot on one side and three four spots on the other side and then shown again to have three spots on one side and six spots on the other) are perfect for this. With this effect one can show the effect, explain that what is being done is not real, but just an illusion. Then the effect continues and it does things beyond what you just explained. This adds to the humor, but also ends it mysteriously. But in the midst of it all, it makes the point that what you are doing is just illusion. Do not just expose an effect to expose an effect. This keeps others from being able to do it. Look for what are known as sucker effects, like described before, to keep the secrets of other performers safe. We need to show respect and courtesy to fellow performers. There are acts out there who feel for the sake of Christianity that it is good to expose effects. This “masked magician” with a Christian twist concept really needs to be stopped. What value is it to do this? The message here is not evangelism, but “look how smart I am and how dumb you are to fall for it.” It also just gives those who are called by God to share this way a harder time to say nothing of the fact that we get “lumped with them” in the view of those in the secular magic world. While we certainly are not looking for applause from the world, being honorable to the practices of keeping the secrets is a good witness. |
